Essesu (Recognition of the Moon)

For the New Moon

May Ningal, the exalted lady,
the lady of benevolent omens, hear our prayers!
Carried on the smoke of this offering,
Pronounced in our hearts or aloud,
Guide us toward balance.

For the Full Moon

May Nanna, king of Heaven and Earth, the Lord,
our protective deity, hear these prayers!
Carried on the smoke of this offering,
Pronounced in our hearts or aloud,
Guide us toward balance.

Prepare the Altar area as usual, clean it (soap and water).
Place a clean altar cloth upon it.
Place the censor in the center.
The candle (neutral color or white) behind the censor.

When you are ready to start, light the charcoal for the incense and have the incense ready. Relax and clear your mind, if you have a prayer make sure it is clear in your mind. Then place the incense on the charcoal or light the stick or cone. Repeat the appropriate lines from above for the current phase of the moon. Bring your prayer to the front of your mind and repeat it in thought or aloud. Stay focused on the prayer for a few seconds, when you are finished pronounce “Dur An Ki”, extinguish the candle(s) and allow the incense to finish burning out. Put the candle in a safe place for the next phase. Rejoice.

The best time is in the evening after sunset or after moon rise which ever is appropriate for that time of the cycle. I prefer just before bed time, the relaxed state I find myself in aids in a wonderful night's sleep.
