Daily Reverence

When and How

Daily reverence is important. Though many think this is primarily a part of organized religion it is an important part of any act of faith. This is evident throughout history, as far back as Sumer, Akkad and even Babylon. This is seen in the many niches found in the dwellings unearthed in the Mesopotamian region. These niches once held many effigies of city and household deities and can be simple icons or intricate statuettes. So, we too encourage these acts of daily reverence.

Daily reverence can be as simple or as elaborate as one wishes it to be.

The basic ritual for daily reverence is

Clear a space large enough for the items needed. If you have an altar then use it, else a table or small desk will do quite well. Remove all items that are not related to what you are about to do, clutter is distracting. Select the Deity that you will be directing your thoughts to. When ready quietly light the candle and incense, then focus on a peaceful day, better health or just a good day. Maintain your concentration for five minutes or longer as time will allow. Then extinguish the candle and let the incense finish burning. This should be done every day, the time of day when you do it is entirely up to you, though the middle of the day is not considered to be the best time for it.

The ritual practice is an important part of religious life and confirmation of faith. Daily reverence should be a family event. Include your children as much as possible, have them help set up the ritual area and if they are old enough have them participate in the lighting of the candle(s) and incense. This builds a strong family unit and creates a unified faith, which is important part of family life.
